Transboundary Cooperation in Teaching and Practice – How can UNESCO Biosphere Regions contribute to an effective communication and ecosystem management for the promotion of a sustainable transformation in Eastern Europe?

The Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Management is pleased to announce an open competition for funded research stays within the DAAD-project "Transboundary Cooperation in Teaching and Practice – How can UNESCO Biosphere Regions contribute to an effective communication and ecosystem management for the promotion of a sustainable transformation in Eastern Europe?". Positions

We offer the following research stay positions:

  • one position for junior researcher (PhD student)
    • Duration
      • Max. 3 months at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development
      • The applicant should propose a wished suitable period of stay at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development and an alternative period. The stay should end latest on 30 November 2019.
    • Main task
      • Research on (proposed research fields, of which all can be covered or just a selection – see also figure with Key Questions of the Project):
        • Sustainable ecosystem management
        • Securing of ecosystem services
        • Conflict management/prevention
        • Participatory processes
        • Transboundary cooperation
        • Sustainable transformation governance
      • Research should be carried out as case study in German biosphere reserves (preferably in a transboundary context (bordering biosphere reserves), but no compulsion)
      • Develop recommendations for an effective and integrated management of Biosphere Regions in the context of conflict prevention (and transboundary cooperation).
    • one position for senior researcher (postdoc)
      • Duration
        • Max. 2 months at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development
        • The applicant should propose a wished suitable period of stay at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development and an alternative period. The stay should end latest on 30 November 2019.
      • Main task
        • Analysis of management of Biosphere Regions and their potential as sustainable management and conflict prevention laboratories (see also figure with Key Questions of the Project)
        • To get in contact with partners from practice in ecosystem management (including securing of ecosystem services) in Biosphere Regions

Financial support

  • For position of junior researcher: 1.200 €/ month plus 400 € travel allowance
  • For position of senior researcher: 2.500 €/ month plus 400 € travel allowance

Other kinds of support

The Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Management will provide a work space and contacts to German partners from practice in ecosystem management (e.g. Biosphere Reserve administrations).

Important Note

Costs for trips inside of Germany to the case study regions will have to be covered by the monthly financial support.

Requirements

In order to apply for the grant, applicants must meet all the following requirements. Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in a candidate being ineligible.

The following requirements must be met:

  • Strong interest in the project-related topic
  • Ability and motivation to independently develop concrete research questions and research design
  • B2 English or German

The following formal requirements must also be met:

  • Junior researchers
    • Current teaching or research assignment or PhD study at the Ukrainian National Forest University
  • Senior researcher
    • PhD degree and at least 2 years professional experience as lecturer or researcher at the Ukrainian National Forestry University

Selection Process and Criteria

A complete application must reach the Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Management in digital form by the deadline (see below). After the deadline, all applications received by then will be reviewed and evaluated by an appointed selection committee.

The selection committee is appointed by the Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Management. It will consist of the following three members:

  1. Project Assistance (CEEM) - initial review of applications and verification of compliance, preparation of an overview and initial assessment
  2. Project management (CEEM) - inspection of applications in consultation with the project assistant, checking in particular that the content of the criteria has been met
  3. Representatives of the relevant partner institution (UNFU) - Final agreement, in particular on the feasibility of implementation, or to obtain an assessment of the quality and reliability of the applicants

Accordingly, the decision-making process goes through a three-stage selection process.

The selection committee will assess the following criteria:

  • Consistency of the research background with the project topic;
  • Level and correspondence of the proposed research programme with the formulated objectives for the research stay and the project theme.

  • Objectives, expected results and brief description of the planned research (including the proposed case study areas)
  • Desired period and possible alternative period

Electronic applications have to be handed in

by 12:00 pm Central European Time

on 18 March 2019.
